Patient Information Leaflet

Our practice has agreed to enter into shared care arrangements for ADHD medication with private providers, provided certain conditions are met. This leaflet explains what you, as a patient, need to know about how this shared care works.

1. Shared Care Protocol Requirement

  • Your private ADHD provider must send us a formal shared care protocol before we can prescribe medication.
  • They must commit to reviewing your treatment regularly and providing us with clear guidance on any changes to your medication.

2. Prescribing Limitations

  • We can only prescribe the exact medication that your private provider has recommended.
  • We cannot make substitutions or switch brands or doses unless your provider advises us to do so.
  • ⚠️ Please note: This rule is currently relaxed due to a national shortage of some ADHD medications. However, this may change if national supply issues are resolved and local guidance is updated.

3. If Your Private Provider Stops Operating

  • If your private provider stops working or closes down, we will not be able to continue prescribing without advice from a specialist.
  • In this case, you would need to be referred back to the NHS Neurodevelopmental Service (NeSS).
  • Please be aware that there may be significant delays in getting an NHS appointment due to high demand and long waiting lists.
  • During this time, your shared care arrangement would end, and we would not be able to continue your ADHD medication on our own.

If you have any questions about this process, please speak with a member of the clinical team.
